Best places to visit in Caribbean Islands

The Caribbean Sea is home to some of the most popular travel destinations in the world. Every year, hundreds of Caribbean cruise ships set sail, full of eager families, honeymooners, and other tourists who look forward to soaking up the sun and playing on the sandy beaches that have become synonymous with the region. However, not every Caribbean island is a popular port of call for cruise ship corporations. Here are some of the Caribbean’s best-kept secrets, for travelers who like to vacation a little more outside-the-box.

Culebra, Puerto Rico

Craving a calming, chilled-out beach experience? Culebra may be just the place for you! A sleepy little island with some of the clearest turquoise water you’ll ever see, Culebra gives you the peace and quiet you need to unplug from life and focus on supreme relaxation. You can fly directly into Culebra from San Juan, or ferry over from Fajardo. Enjoy the silence!
Fun Fact: Culebra means “snake” in Spanish.

Saba, Lesser Antilles

Saba is a little pocket of paradise that most tourists don’t even know exists. The rocky shores do not host any typical Caribbean Island beaches. Saba is actually the top of Mount Scenery.

Nevis, West Indies

High in the northern part of the West Indies lies the hidden gem of Nevis- a picturesque marvel of a Caribbean island featuring an astounding population of stingrays and sea turtles. Ideal for adventure-seekers and sun worshippers alike, Nevis features high-end hotels like the Four Seasons as well as an amazing dive site called Booby High Shoals. Nevis has a medical school as well, the Medical University of the Americas. Getting to Nevis is relatively easy: just hop a plane from San Juan, Puerto Rico, or take a ferry from St. Kitts and you’re there!
Fun Fact: Nevis is the birthplace of Founding Father/hit musical subject Alexander Hamilton.

Martinique, Lesser Antilles

Though it is name-dropped in the Beach Boys’ definitive ode to island living, Kokomo, Martinique is still one of the lesser-known islands of the Caribbean. Besides miles of tropical beaches and rainforests, Martinique is also home to Melee, a volcano which erupted in 1792, 1851, and twice in 1902. Ideal for vacationers who like a side of adventure with their relaxation, you can get to Martinique by plane- Miami offers direct flights to the island.
Fun Fact: The two 1902 eruptions of Melee in Martinique were instrumental in the U.S. Congress’ vote to begin construction of the Panama Canal in 1904. Originally, the canal was meant to be built in Nicaragua, but the presence of a dormant volcano there made people nervous after the eruption of Melee.

Anegada, British Virgin Islands

For secluded beaches, prime snorkeling and scuba diving conditions, and some of the best fishing in the Caribbean, it’s tough to beat Anegada. Located in the British Virgin Islands, Anegada is home to a vast array of rare wildlife, as well the site of spooky shipwrecks which can be explored on snorkeling and scuba tours. You can fly in from San Juan, St. Thomas, or Tortola, making Anegada easily accessible.
Fun Fact: At 18 miles long, Horseshoe Reef in Anegada is the largest coral barrier reef in the Caribbean, and the fourth-largest in the world.

Canouan, Grenadines Islands

If you happen to be planning a getaway while being rich and famous, Canouan may be the destination of your dreams! The social elite love Canouan for its obscurity, not to mention its abundance of four-star golf clubs, resorts, and spas.
